Rats have historically been responsible for many health issues across the globe. There have been accounts through 1000’s of years of recorded history of plagues followed by millions of deaths attributed to rats. So it’s no wonder that rats and mice spring fear into many..
Rats themselves are not the only sources of these diseases, in fact many diseases (such as the black plague) are spread by the fleas that live on the back of the rats.
Its estimated that 4 out of 6 houses in Queensland have rats either in the roof cavity, wall cavity, garden shed or on and around the property. That’s extremely alarming when you consider that there are a number of diseases and illnesses that are spread by rats.
4 out of 6 homes does sound like a lot. Lets assume for now that the statistics are wrong, and lets say that only 3 out of 6 homes have rats. This means that either you or your neighbor will likely have at least one family of rodents living on or close to your property.
Now I’m a pest controller and I have even had rats in my roof, but obviously I don’t have them any more. This was easily solved with placement of baits in my roof and the blocking in of some access points.
A big problem for me is that I also have a hen house, and a couple of dogs. These are both great food sources for rodents. I can control the dogs to some extent, cleaning up the dog droppings and making sure that no food scraps or bowls are left out at night. But lets face it that’s not always possible, and you can never really be 100% clean with dogs. But as far as the hen house goes I have to face facts, there isn’t a great deal I can do to clean up these areas.. So the best result for me was to place a couple of bait boxes near the hen house and in the yard (problem solved).
Tips For Rodents
Because I already have great food sources around my property rats love visiting. So for me the only option left is to ensure that I continue to keep my area around my house clean.
- Putting away the dog dishes at night
- Cleaning up the dog droppings
- Relocating the Garbage Bins away from the house
- Keeping tree branches off the house
- Making sure I don’t have anything leaning against the house
- Sealing any potential access points into roof and cavities
- And of course I put baits into crawl spaces every 12 months
All rat baits are not the same. If you go to your local hardware or supermarket you can easily purchase rat baits. However these are “non restricted” baits; which means that as long as you have the money in your pocket you can purchase them. Yes I will concede that they are potentially dangerous, if your dog eats one they will most likely die, and you do need to ensure children stay away from them. But you don’t require a pest controllers license to purchase them.
The reason you don’t require a license is because they are not restricted, they do not operate in the same manner as baits which registered pest controllers have access to. In most cases the baits you can purchase only have a shelf life of weeks to a few months. This means that once opened you need the rats to start eating them immediately. The baits that pest controllers have access to have active ingredients that last around 12 months.
The chemical component in off the shelf rat baits also contain compounds which means that the rodents will die in the roof space or walls, as they are designed to kill shortly after consumption. Where as the products pest controller use (the ones we use) have an active ingredient that sends the rodent in search of water.
This means that the rats will usually leave your house cavities in search of water, and are generally found dead close to water sources. This is because they cannot stop drinking and wont leave their water source and usually die close by. This means no smells, no rotting rats in the roof or walls, not flies or maggots raining out of roof cavities.
